Pope Benedict Expected to Approve Pope John Paul II for Beatification

ThirdAge.com - Pope John Paul II is expected to be approved for beatification this week by Pope Benedict.
Beatification requires the evidence of having performed a miracle. Evidence of having performed two miracles allows for approval of sainthood.
The case for Pope John Paul II’s beatification says that a young French nun was cured of Parkinson’s disease, which the former Pope also had, after she prayed to him. According to the Telegraph, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints approved the medical and theological evidence that John Paul had cured the nun.
Canonization usually requires a five-year waiting period, but Benedict allowed John Paul to bypass the period. Typically, canonization can take decades, even centuries, before the initial phases begin, but just weeks after the beloved Pope died, chants of “Santo Subito!” (or “Sainthood immediately!”) echoed during his funeral.
Now, only Benedict’s approval remains for John Paul to be one step closer to sainthood.
