The holiday recognizes the emancipation of more than 3,000 slaves in Washington D.C. back on April 16, 1862.
The holiday is celebrated in the District of Columbia every April 16. Since April 16 falls on a Saturday this year, the District will celebrate on the Friday before, which happens to be April 15.
The April 15 tax filing deadline has been in place since 1955.
